SkillsFuture Credit for AI Courses — 2026 Guide
Every Singaporean aged 25 and above has at least $500 in SkillsFuture Credit. If you are 40 or older, you could have up to $4,500. This guide shows you exactly how to use it to pay for AI courses at Vertical Institute — and how to bring your out-of-pocket cost to $0.
What is SkillsFuture Credit?
SkillsFuture Credit is a government initiative that gives every Singaporean aged 25 and above a personal training budget. You receive a base credit of $500, which is deposited into your SkillsFuture account automatically. There is no application needed — if you are a Singapore Citizen aged 25 or older, you already have it.
The credit can be used to pay for thousands of approved courses, including AI and technology programmes. It is applied directly to offset course fees, so you do not need to pay upfront and claim reimbursement later.
If you are aged 40 to 70, you may also have received mid-career top-ups of up to $4,000 on top of the base $500 — giving you a total of up to $4,500 to spend on approved training.
Log in to MySkillsFuture with your Singpass to check your balance. It takes less than a minute.
How much SkillsFuture Credit do you have?
Your total depends on your age group. Singaporeans in their 40s to 70s receive the most because of additional mid-career top-ups from the government.
| Age group | Base credit | Mid-career top-up | Total available |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 to 39 | $500 | — | $500 |
| 40 to 70 | $500 | Up to $4,000 | Up to $4,500 |
The base $500 credit does not expire. Mid-career top-ups may have validity periods, so check your account for specific expiry dates on any top-up amounts.

How subsidy stacking works
SkillsFuture Credit is just one layer. When you combine it with other subsidies, you can often bring your out-of-pocket cost to $0. Here is how the layers stack:
- SSG subsidy is applied first. Singapore Citizens aged 40 and above receive a 70% subsidy. Citizens under 40 and Permanent Residents receive 50%. This is deducted automatically from the full course fee.
- SkillsFuture Credit is applied second. You use your credit to cover the remaining balance after the SSG subsidy.
- UTAP can stack on top. If you are an NTUC member, you can claim up to $500 per year through the Union Training Assistance Programme for additional reimbursement.
- PSEA is another option for younger learners. Singaporeans aged 21 to 31 can use Post-Secondary Education Account funds to pay for eligible courses.
Full course fee: $1,798.50 (incl. GST)
SSG subsidy (70%): −$1,155.00

SkillsFuture Credit used: −$643.50
Out-of-pocket: $0 (plus $10.90 registration fee)
Remaining SkillsFuture Credit: $3,856.50 (from $4,500) — enough to also cover the AI Workflow Automation Course.
Full course fee: $1,417 (incl. GST)
SSG subsidy (70%): −$910.00
Balance after SSG: $507
SkillsFuture Credit used: −$507
Out-of-pocket: $0 (plus $10.90 registration fee)
Are you an employer looking to train your team?
SkillsFuture Credit is for individuals only. If you want to sponsor your employees for AI training, the SkillsFuture Enterprise Credit (SFEC) may be a better fit — it provides up to $10,000 for qualifying businesses. You can also claim Absentee Payroll to offset salary costs while your team is in training. Visit our team training page for corporate options.
Common mistakes to avoid
These are the issues we see most often. A few minutes of preparation can save you delays and unexpected costs.
The SSG subsidy must be applied first. If you try to use your SkillsFuture Credit on the full course fee instead of the subsidised balance, you will use more credit than necessary. Make sure you are claiming against the post-subsidy amount — $643.50 for the Generative AI Course (40+), not $1,798.50.
Not every course is SkillsFuture Credit eligible. Always check that the course is listed on the MySkillsFuture portal before you plan your budget. Both Vertical Institute AI courses covered in this guide are confirmed eligible.
SkillsFuture Credit covers course fees, but the $10.90 registration fee charged by Vertical Institute must be paid out-of-pocket. It is a small amount, but it catches people off guard when they expect $0 total.
Your SkillsFuture Credit claim needs to be submitted before the course start date. Do not wait until after the course has started — claims submitted late may be rejected. Apply as soon as you have enrolled.
Frequently asked questions
All Singaporeans aged 25 and above receive a base credit of $500. If you are aged 40 to 70, you may have received additional mid-career top-ups of up to $4,000, bringing your total to $4,500. The exact balance depends on whether you have used any credit before. Log in to myskillsfuture.gov.sg with your Singpass to check your current balance.
Yes. Both the Generative AI Course ($1,798.50) and the AI Workflow Automation Course ($1,417) at Vertical Institute are SkillsFuture Credit eligible. They are WSQ-certified and listed on the MySkillsFuture portal.
The base $500 credit does not expire. However, mid-career top-ups may have validity periods. Check the MySkillsFuture portal for specific expiry dates on any top-up amounts in your account. It is a good idea to use your top-ups while they are still valid.
Yes, and this is the recommended approach. The SSG subsidy (50% or 70%) is applied first, reducing the course fee. You then use your SkillsFuture Credit to cover the remaining balance. For example, the Generative AI Course costs $1,798.50. After the 70% SSG subsidy for Singaporeans 40+, the balance is $643.50. You apply $643.50 from your SkillsFuture Credit and pay $0 out-of-pocket (excluding the $10.90 registration fee).
No. The $10.90 registration fee charged by Vertical Institute is not covered by SkillsFuture Credit. This small fee must be paid separately.
Besides the SSG subsidy, there are two more options. NTUC members can claim up to $500 per year through the Union Training Assistance Programme (UTAP). Singaporeans aged 21 to 31 can use Post-Secondary Education Account (PSEA) funds. Both can stack on top of SkillsFuture Credit and the SSG subsidy.
SkillsFuture Credit belongs to the individual, not the employer. Your employees can choose to use their own credit for any eligible course, but you cannot direct them to. If you want to sponsor AI training for your team as a company, look into the SkillsFuture Enterprise Credit (SFEC) instead, which provides up to $10,000 for qualifying businesses. We also have a dedicated team training page with corporate pricing.
Submit your claim on the MySkillsFuture portal before your course start date. Claims typically take a few working days to process, so apply as early as possible after you have enrolled. Do not wait until the course is over — late claims may be rejected.
